International Women's Day 2008

International Women’s Day!

International Women’s Day (IWD) was inspired by large demonstrations of striking women

garment workers in 1908 in New York, who demanded political and economic rights for

women. At the same time, thousands of women in London held protests for their right to vote. In

Australia, the first IWD rally calling for equal rights for women was held in 1928. In 1977,

the United Nations recognised International Women’s Day as an international day

to acknowledge women’s contributions to society and our on-going struggles for

justice and equality. Millions of women around the world now commemorate

International Women’s Day on March 8th every year.

Why our Network celebrates IWD:

IWD is an important opportunity to join with other women to celebrate our strengths and achievements as women and to keep fighting for women’s rights. 80 years after the first IWD march in Australia, we still struggle for equality and justice for all women.

NSW Network of Women with Disability also participates in IWD to ensure that our needs and rights, as women with disabilities, are recognised by women’s organisations and by society.

How our Network will be involved this year:

The Network’s International Women’s Day Project aims to increase our members’ participation in IWD. In 2008, NSW Network of Women with Disability will be involved in rural, regional and Sydney-based events. We invite you to join in, to celebrate with other women with disabilities and our non-disabled (not-yet-disabled) sisters.

Subsidies to assist you to access IWD events:

We recognise that it can be difficult and costly for some women with disabilities to be able to attend events. We don’t want you to miss out because you can’t afford it!

We have set aside some funds to assist women with disabilities to attend IWD events. To register for a subsidy, please call Bronwyn on 0418  204045

or e-mail Ena at: IWD.Project@gmail.com

Rural and regional events:

We are busy finding out about IWD marches, concerts, workshops and other events around NSW. We are working with the organisers of these events to raise their awareness of disability issues, and to make sure their activities are as accessible as possible for women with disabilities.

We recognise that women living in rural and regional areas often have greater costs and fewer options to access women’s events. We especially encourage women from rural and regional areas to contact us for IWD subsidies.

We are compiling a list of IWD events, including their disability access arrangements. We have information on IWD events in:

Sydney events:

We are also finding out about IWD events taking place around Sydney.

IWD March (Sydney):

The major Sydney IWD event will be a March, Rally and Festival on International Women’s Day, on Saturday, March 8th. The Network will be participating in this event. Join us for the March, the Festival, or both! One of the speakers at Sydney IWD will be a Network member.

International Women’s Day Rally & March

Saturday 8 March at 12 noon

The March will head out from Sydney Town Hall, up George St to King St, up King St to Elizabeth St, then along Elizabeth St to Hyde Park for the IWD festival.

We will be marching with our Network banner!

Join us at Sydney Town Hall at 11.45 am.

We need a loud, proud presence reminding others of our issues and our rights and of our strength, resilience and courage as women and as people with disabilities.

IWD Festival:

The March will end in a huge festival at Hyde Park North, with entertainment, a memory tent, information stalls and lots, lots more. Our Network is planning to have an information stall and to run a “Living Library” event at the festival. We hope to be part of the entertainment too!

Disability Access Arrangements @ Hyde Park:

Our ‘Living Library’ of women with disabilities:

‘Living Libraries’ are like other libraries, except that that instead of borrowing a book, you ‘borrow’ a person to chat about their life experiences. So the ‘Books’ are actual people, who share their stories with readers who ‘borrow’ them for a limited period of time (e.g. 15 minutes).

A ‘Living Library’ aims to break down prejudice and promote understanding and tolerance of marginalised groups in our society.
The ‘Books’ in the ‘Living Library’ are people representing groups frequently confronted with prejudices and stereotypes, and who are
often victims of discrimination or social exclusion.

Women with disabilities make wonderful ‘Books’. We have so many stories of strength, courage, resilience and survival. Sharing our stories can break down barriers and dispel discrimination.

Our ‘Living Library’ at International Women’s Day will be an effective means to get other women to understand more about the lives of women with disabilities. The ‘Library’ is a great way to raise awareness of our realities. It offers readers a chance to learn about us beyond their assumptions and stereotypes.

The ‘Living Library’ will be conducted in a safe environment, with ‘Librarians’ on hand to ensure that ‘Borrowers’ treat the ‘books’ with care and respect.

A training workshop to brief our ‘Books’ and ‘Librarians’will be held on Tuesday March 4th from 12 pm - 2 pm. If needed, a second training session may be arranged.

The training workshop will brief our “Books” on what to expect, how to present your story, and some strategies for deflecting questions that are too personal. Refreshments will be provided at the training session.

The training session will take place on:

Tuesday March 4th

12 pm – 2 pm

at: MHA

Terrace Towers

Level 5, 80 William St

East Sydney

Terrace Towers is 2 buildings back from the Westfield building.

The venue has a lift.

There is accessible parking inside the building, but you would need to pay a parking fee. There is also parking available on the street.

Accessible bathrooms are located on level 6.

Subsidies are available to assist women with the costs of accessing the training and the “Living Libraries” event.

find out more about Living Libraries

We want to fill our ‘Living Library’ with diverse and fascinating ‘Books’ (i.e. you!)

If you are interested in being a ‘Book’, or a Librarian, or want to find out more:

e-mail Ena at: IWD.Project@gmail.com

or call Katielee on 1 800 629 072 or 9891 6400.

You need to register for the training workshop and to be a ‘Book’.

Our ‘Living Library’ will be in the Memory Tent of the IWD Festival,  Hyde Park North, from 3 - 4 pm on Saturday March 8th.

The Memory Tent will be located on the grass at Hyde Park north, 2 meters from the path.

Network Stall:

We will have an information stall at the festival, where we will display information and publicity about the Network and about issues that women with disabilities face. We will also offer demonstrations of our website. An information stall at IWD is a great opportunity to make contact with new women and let them know about our Network and what we do.

We need women to work on the stall handing out information and answering questions!!! If you can help on the stall for an hour or two, or you can help set up or pack up, please e-mail Ena at: IWD.Project@gmail.com or call WOW on 1 800 629 072.
