Useful consumer resources and parenting products

 

Australian Consumers' Association

Resource Type: Organisation, Information

An independent, non-profit organisation that campaigns, and researches products on behalf of consumers. Services include comprehensive and helpful reports on features to consider when purchasing products e.g. report on baby carriers for parents with a disability. The website includes a section on “babies and kids” with new baby checklist, baby safety shopping guide, and free baby newsletter.

ACCC Guides on Safe Products for Babies & Children

Area Covered: Australia

Resource Type: Information

 The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission produce a wide range of booklets [free to download online] that can guide parents on safety issues when purchasing products. Some examples of guides available include - Keeping baby safe; A guide to nursery furniture, [2005] giving standards and safety information on nursery furniture from cots, change tables, baths, prams, to playpens; Babies dummies: keep baby safe, safety alert [2006]; Product safety—safe toys for kids [2005]; Baby bath aids safety alert [2005]; Baby walker safety [2005]. It lists valuable safety numbers for fair trading, standards, road safety authorities, and more. Go to “Publications” or use the search engine on the website.

Baby Slings

Area Covered: Australia

Resource Type: Equipment, Limb Loss

Baby slings are popular for parents today and generally available in baby stores. Choose one that fits the wearer snugly and one that supports the baby's head and spine. Can be great for breastfeeding, for parents with either upper limb loss/impairment, or those who use a wheelchair for mobility.     

They are likely to be available at larger baby care outlets. Shopping directories at websites like www.bubhub.com.au may be useful. Some examples of sling products are listed in this section.        

 

Ergo Baby Carrier

Products like this can be useful for carrying baby whilst mobile. Can be used for front, back or hip carrying. This carrier offers good lumber support for the wearer [however it is expensive]. It adjusts to many body types. Code 30928.  A range of slings and carriers are offered online.

Technical Aid to the Disabled [TADNSW]

An Australian-wide organisation of volunteers with expertise to provide custom-designed or engineered aids and equipment for people with disabilities. TADNSW includes 12 regional centres across NSW, and has an information service and library resources available.

Independent Living Centre NSW [ILC]

 ILC has a comprehensive database of products and equipment to assist with daily living activities. ILC have an information line staffed by qualified personnel. It also has an Outreach Services Coordinator for people with disabilities in rural NSW. Available in other states too.

Choosing a Cot or Child's Bed – Points to Consider.

Ricability Reports – Childcare Products for Disabled Parents

A useful series of detailed reports specifying issues to consider when deciding on equipment. Report includes highchairs, baby carriers, push chairs, bottle warmers, and safety gates. Each report provides findings on ease of use on specific product models, and sources of further help. They include product features to look for if you have poor sight, limited dexterity, difficulty walking, or use a wheelchair. Go to “Reports” and then “Childcare Products”.

Baby Lifter II

Resource Type: Organisation, Equipment, Spinal Injury, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The purpose of this item created by TADNSW was to enable a client, with chronic fatigue syndrome and back problems, to raise her baby from ground level to bench height. This aid is documented in the TAD AID BOOK available for free download on the TADNSW website. Details of the project are on page 29. Change Table [Fixed/adjustable height]

Baby Bathtub

Resource Type: Equipment, Cerebral Palsy

A baby bathtub that requires no lifting by carer. It was designed for Trish who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. This baby bathtub was built using an off-the shelf baby tub, a computer table, a dishwasher hose, and some hardware. Go to section on “adaptive parenting products” on the website.

Cot Modification for Wheelchair Access

This modification converts the drop-sides of a cot into two hinged gates, and a child-proof latch. It enables easy access for parents who use wheelchairs. Project no. 1999-122

Prams/Stroller Handle Aid

Laundry Trolley [modified]
