In-Home Care – a Commonwealth government funded service – provides flexible childcare in the child’s home by an approved carer. Eligibility categories include parent with serious illness/disability, families in remote rural areas, multiple birth families etc. Families need referral e.g. GP or from Area Health Service.

Karitane

Karitane provide comprehensive child and family support services by specialist child and family health professionals. Centres are located at Randwick, Fairfield Heights, Carramar, and Liverpool. Support includes residential care, day stay and home visiting. Information and support are provided to families of NESB. Services include breastfeeding clinic, counselling women with PND, mothers groups, 24-hour state-wide telephone service, sleep and settle groups, and toddler management. The telephone service can put you in touch with a nearby clinic.

Tresillian Family Care Centres

Area Covered: NSW

Resource Type: Service Provider

They provide professional care and advice to parents needing help and support with their young baby or toddler. They offer practical assistance on a range of issues e.g. settling your baby. A referral from your GP or Early Childhood Health Nurse is required. Residential services are provided at Canterbury, Penrith (both wheelchair accessible) and Willoughby (not wheelchair accessible). Day stay is also available. An Outreach service that visits parents in their own home (both services are free). An interpreter service can be arranged. Educational seminars are also held throughout Sydney.

First Five Years, Home Visiting Program [Benevolent Society]

For families experiencing additional stressors around the birth of a baby. This may be due to social isolation, a disability in the family, multiple births or difficulty accessing non-English services. This is a free service where trained volunteers visit families for 2 hours a week for up to 12 months. They provide general support and can talk through parenting issues with families. Areas serviced include: eastern and central suburbs in Sydney, Marrickville/Leichhardt and Glebe, Wollondilly and Campbelltown LGA.

Parenting Support Program

Area Covered: Newcastle & Hunter Region

This Hunter-based program is located in Bolton Point, Booragul and Morisset. Parents with children 0-5 years are offered free, non-judgemental support with the everyday challenges of being a parent. If you’re coping with a disability/illness as well as managing a family, want to be put in contact with other services, feeling overwhelmed or worried about your baby’s development, a home visit can be arranged with an experienced support worker. Funded by Families First, run by Hunter C & FS and run through Wesley Mission’s Newcastle Centre.

Inner City Family Network

The Infants Home

Early Childhood Health Centres [ECHC]

ECHC are located in all area health regions across NSW, providing free community health services for parents and children (0-5 years). They can provide advice and help on baby care issues, parenting, sleeping, growth and development, immunisations, safety and play, nutrition and feeding. They offer counselling and support for mums with postnatal depression. Home visits can be arranged. Staffed by qualified health professionals, including midwifery.

A range of breastfeeding support services – led by a specialist midwife – is available at the Royal Hospital for Women. Pregnant women can learn what to expect and women who are breastfeeding can gain helpful tips.

PANDA [Post and Ante Natal Depression Association]

PANDA is a Victorian based, non-profit self-help organisation for women affected by post and antenatal mood disorders, including partners and extended family members. Their website provides sections on what post natal depression [PND] is, how to relieve it, how to prevent it, breastfeeding with PND etc. Services include a helpline, education, support services and referral. Fact sheets and handouts can be downloaded online e.g. practical strategies for feeling better, and many more.

Early Prevention Program [Benevolent Society]

This program has been developed to offer ongoing support for mothers starting in pregnancy. Includes antenatal support groups and then a 20-week group program postnatal. These include a baby massage group and a mother-baby group. The aim of these groups is to support mothers to develop a nurturing relationship with their infant by developing an understanding of the infant’s communication. The program also has a specialist worker for families where a parent is affected by a long-term mental illness. Services are free.

Family Relationship Skills Program

They focus on the development of family relationship skills, the roles and responsibilities of parenthood. They can arrange one-to-one or group training for parents with intellectual disability. NSW Neighbour Aid and Social Support Association [NASSA]

Playgroup Association of NSW Inc.

An association that represents and supports the establishing of playgroups across NSW. They provide a referral service for families wishing to access their local playgroups. They promote cultural diversity and have information on playgroups available in 15 languages. Support is available to families with additional needs – e.g. indigenous families, parent or child with disability – wanting to attend or attending a playgroup. Playgroup NSW staff assist families with additional needs to find a welcoming community playgroup, or a special needs playgroup appropriate to their circumstances.

A small community-based organisation, which supports isolated families and children/young people in NSW, includes rural areas. Arabic Women’s Group

A multi-cultural mother’s support group program for women from diverse Arabic communities is held at Lakemba, Punchbowl and Bankstown. These groups provide women with an opportunity to build social networks and enhance their knowledge and skills in parenting, nutrition and women’s health. Islamic Women’s Welfare Association (IWWA)

IWWA provide a range of community services including a support group to help Islamic sisters who have just given birth or struck by illness.
